A national charity that embeds itself in local services: Fairbridge

  • Read NPC's analysis of Fairbridge (approximately 20 pages of detailed analysis with a grading grid which rates different aspects of the charity)
  • An update (developments in the charity since the long note was written)

In a nutshell
Fairbridge is a national charity working with young people aged 13 to 25, who are either not in education, employment and training (NEET), or are at risk of becoming so. Its 15 centres deliver services that are managed and part-funded locally, while being supported by central offices London and Edinburgh.

NPC believes that services work best if they are tailored for the local community they work in. However,  small, local charities often lack the capacity and infrastructure to deliver top quality services. For example, it is inefficient for an under-resourced youth centre with few staff to invest in an expensive database to collect and monitor information about the young people it helps.

Fairbridge has an impressive model of delivering services. Each centre is supported by the central office, which provides facilities such as a monitoring database, training and management. The centres benefit from the national charity’s fundraising efforts, but also, with support from central office, raise their own funds from local sources. However, despite operating as part of a national charity, each of Fairbridge’s centres has a local, personalised approach, with its own ‘feel’ and personality.
